Vision

To be the benchmark for the most innovative, transformative, and effective protection and promotion of public health.

Mission

To work in partnership with the City of Vernon, its business community, and residents to assess environmental health risks and to create a community-oriented solution that enhances the quality of life for all.

 ABOUT US

As one of only four cities in California with its own health department, the City of Vernon is dedicated to protecting the environment and safeguarding the health and safety of residents, workers, visitors, and neighboring communities. Established in 1908, the Vernon Department of Health & Environmental Control (DHEC) delivers comprehensive, efficient services tailored to the needs of the City’s large industrial sector.

DHEC provides a wide range of programs for businesses and residents to ensure compliance with local and state regulations, while also supporting the essential needs of the community.

From food safety and water quality to solid waste and sustainability, DHEC serves as a central resource for clear regulatory guidance, specialized permitting, and public education. Its expert staff are readily accessible to both businesses and residents.

By maintaining its own municipal health authority, Vernon works directly with DHEC officials to address environmental and public health issues, enabling faster response times, particularly during critical situations.
