Mayor Melissa Ybarra was born and raised in the City of Vernon where her family has lived for generations. Mayor Ybarra was first elected to the Vernon City Council in a Special Election in February 2015, following the passing of her father and former Council Member, the Honorable Michael A. Ybarra. She served the remainder of her late father’s unexpired term and was later re-elected to serve her first official term in office in April 2017. In 2017, Mayor Ybarra was appointed by her fellow Council members as the City’s first female Mayor and has served in this capacity four times since then. In April 2022, Vernon’s voters elected Mayor Ybarra to serve another five-year term. Now in her last term in office, Mayor Ybarra remains as committed to the City, its good governance, its success and its people as when she first took office.
Mayor Ybarra represents the City of Vernon as a delegate to many boards outside the City including the Board of Directors of the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County, the Southeast Water Coalition and the Greater Los Angeles County Vector Control District. As Mayor, she most recently participated on the City’s Rebranding Steering Committee, helping to develop Vernon’s new look and tagline.
As an active member of the community, over the years Mayor Ybarra has been engaged with local school site council’s including for Vernon City Elementary School and Linda Marquez High School, Huntington Park Institute of Applied Medicine (HPIAM). She has also volunteered her time to non-profit organizations, including the Girl Scouts of the USA and the Southeast Community Development Corporation.
Mayor Ybarra’s roots in the Vernon community run deep, and she is thoroughly invested in the City’s success. She is the proud parent of two daughters, both born and raised in her beloved Vernon.
