Vernon Green Hydrogen Project
Vernon Public Utilities, in partnership with Avina Clean Hydrogen Inc., built the first onsite clean hydrogen production and distribution facility in California. The facility, also known as the Vernon Green Hydrogen Project, is touted to be the largest of its kind in North America.
The green hydrogen is produced through a water electrolysis process, which uses electricity to split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen. The production process may be achieved without carbon emissions, thereby making it a clean source of energy.
In August 2025, the Los Angeles Times published an article highlighting Avina's project in Vernon, along with its impact as one of the largest hydrogen production and dispensing facilities in the country when it opens in late 2025.
Project Specs:
- Utilizes an advanced proton exchange membrane water electrolysis technology
- Development may qualify for 45V Credit (Clean Hydrogen Production Tax Credit)
- Production capacity will be 4.2 Max Tolerable Period of Disruption (MTPD)
- Phase 1 of production: 177mmbtu /4000kg a day
- Scheduled to be in operation by October 2025
- Contracts in place for off takers to support the transportation sector.
